Welcome back...to the second week of our online Bible study with pastor and author Louie Giglio. It is important that as we proceed with this week and the coming weeks of our study, you remember two key points that Louie made in last week's session; that you are not David in the story, and that deliverance from giants that threaten us is not only for our freedom, but also for God's fame! When any giant is holding you at bay, God's glory is not being manifested in and through your life as it should. That's why it is so important that, as we'll study this week, the giant of fear must fall.
In this powerful and well-known story from the life of David recorded in 1 Samuel 17, the first giant we meet is Goliath. But as we will begin to see this week, there are also "other giants" visible in this story. Today, we look at the giant of FEAR which you will quickly see is right there in the midst of this story.
You may not readily identify this giant in your life, but then again, you may begin to see it more clearly than ever. Fear is a major topic for all of us, and is common to most everyone. This is evidenced by the fact that there are 366 verses in God's Word (one for each day of the year!) that admonish us about fear (fear not, do not be afraid, etc).
This week's teaching segment with Louie is entitled Fear Must Fall, and it is waiting for your viewing now!
Someone has defined fear as "the impending concern that something bad or terrible is about to happen". You may or may not readily identify with this feeling, but most of us do struggle with the giant of fear at some level. It may be present in your life as a result of one of the three factors that Louie lists in the teaching segment:
You were never meant to live in a state of fear. Regardless of which factor or factors above may have brought you to this battle, know this; the Lord wants you to be free from the giant of fear. Like all the others we'll examine, this giant must fall!
Among the many negative factors that result from living with fear, perhaps the most destructive is that it causes us to doubt. Fear is a direct assault on our faith and trust. In Matthew 14, there is an account of disciples being caught in a vicious storm at sea in which they were "terrified with fear". After Jesus stills the storm, he asks the question regarding their fear, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" (Matthew 14:31)
Just two verses later in this same account, we read that those who were in the boat worshipped him, and proclaimed, "Truly, you are the Son of God." As Jesus delivers us from the giant of fear, we find that we are once again overwhelmed, just as those disciples were that night, with the fact that he is God, he is powerful, and he is in control. As a result, we respond in worship, just as they did. As Louie points out in the teaching segment this week, fear and worship cannot exist together.
Three things that we would do well to remind ourselves of when fear tries to taunt us as Goliath did the armies of Israel:
You may need to renounce your past if you were conditioned to fear. Regardless of what climate you were raised in, God wants you to trust Him, not fear the future.
You may need to confess and ask for forgiveness, if you are afraid because you are concealing something (your sins were never meant to be covered or concealed, but confessed and cleansed!).
You may need to surrender if you are one who fears losing control. Giving up control can be the most affirming action ever, if you relinquish it to your good, good Father. After all, the opposite of fear...is faith!
Lastly for this week, we encourage you spend time in prayer, asking God to remind you afresh of his unfailing love for you, not driven by circumstances or performance, but by his value of you as one of his children.
